Performing artists flock to The Alexander Technique

Relief from unwanted conditions is only part of the story. Perhaps a bigger contribution of Alexander's work is enhancing all aspects of human endeavor. Musicians, actors, and other performing artists credit the technique with greatly enhancing their performance. They find that release of unwanted and inappropriate tension unleashes their ability to excel in their chosen area of performing arts.

Joy in everyday living

Dog and Child

Many pupils describe a previously unknown 'lightness of being'. Others marvel at how they are much more able to 'be here now', enjoying everyday activities with more attention and joy than they had thought possible.

Staying young as the years fly by

Alexander WalkingF.M. Alexander

It is not uncommon to see older people who appear to be losing a years-long battle with gravity. In too many seniors, joint stiffness, poor balance, and hunched posture increase with each year. While these conditions can be caused by degenerative diseases and related conditions, often the problems are caused by a gradual process of giving in to the inexorable pull of the earth.

By helping you learn to employ the 'anti-gravity' mechanisms we were born with, lessons in the Alexander Technique can help you to maintain balance and poise as you age.

A related issue in the aging process is the serious danger to older persons posed by falling. At any age a person can trip or otherwise lose their balance with resulting serious or even fatal injury. Loss of balance and agility with aging makes these dangers much greater. An important benefit of Alexander lessons is to dramatically improve balance and environmental awareness. Better balance obviously reduces the danger of falling. Better awareness of one's environment means a much greater likelihood of noticing and avoiding tripping or slipping hazards.

Why does 'wrong use' feel so right?

"One of the most remarkable of man's characteristics is his capacity for becoming used to conditions of almost any kind, whether good or bad, both in the self and in the environment, and once he has become used to such conditions they seem to him both right and natural."

Sometimes we get fan mail

The following email came from a pupil who had had just a few lessons:

"I am working in my office and consciously sitting straight and not using the back rest in my chair. I am now very comfortable this way and it takes no effort. I was reading a paper that I needed to staple so I stood up to get the stapler and it was unconsciously the easiest I've ever stood up. It is not like you said, that I was sitting and then was standing not realizing how I got there, but I was struck by how the sit-stand transition just flowed with almost NO EFFORT! COOL!
